Dr. Rakow has expertise in the areas of structural and mechanical engineering for aircraft and spacecraft, with particular expertise in composite structures. Dr. Rakow’s research addresses the failure analysis and mechanics of composite structures involving overload, fracture, impact, buckling, and elevated temperatures. Dr. Rakow employs mechanical experimentation supplemented with theoretical and numerical analysis to identify and illustrate the root cause of failures.

Dr. Rakow has extensive experience with aerospace structural and mechanical components, consumer products made with composite materials, gas and steam turbines, cranes, general mechanical devices, and a variety of civil structures. He has published a number of scientific articles and frequently presents at national and international technical conferences. He is a contributing author to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Manual of Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation, having authored the section on the failure analysis of composite structures.
